Variations from dry to aquic conditions in Vertisols (Esplugafreda Formation, Eastern Pyrenees, Spain): Implications for late Paleocene climate change

چکیده
Sedimentological studies of ancient fluvial systems commonly do not consider in detail palaeosols floodplain deposits. This is the case upper Paleocene Esplugafreda Formation (Pyrenees, Spain), a 100–340 m thick alluvial succession, which represent more than 80% its thickness. unit closely predates climate crisis Paleocene/Eocene transition, PETM (Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum). The purpose this paper to define palaeoenvironmental conditions formation these palaeopedogenic conditions, and establish possible changes during late directly prior onset PETM. analyses terms variations ‘aquic conditions’, concerning water saturation, reduction redoximorphic features soils. uppermost part consists cumulative sandy mudstone palaeosols, laterally associated with sparse channel Two pedotypes were recognised: Pont d'Orrit Areny. A mud content >60% (mainly montmorillonite), pedogenic slickensides, wedge-shaped aggregates, mukkara blow structures indicate that both belong Vertisol order. They reveal characterised by strong seasonal moisture variations. pedotype, dominates lower portion shows reddish brown horizons (Bss), calcareous nodules concentration (Bssk horizon) scarce features, semi-arid climate. Areny prevails part, yellow horizon (Bssg) containing goethite abundant aquic conditions. There no clear sedimentological evidence river flooding became relatively frequent suggesting caused an increase precipitation. study demonstrates (i) some within Vertisols enable interpretation (ii) region experienced changing Paleocene, before

Menispermaceae from the Cerrejon Formation, middle to late Paleocene, Colombia.
The origin and processes creating the high diversity of plant species in neotropical rain forests and their floristic composition and multistratitified forest structure are still uncertain. Here, we studied one of the most common leaf morphotypes of the Cerrejón flora (middle-late Paleocene, ca. 60-58 Ma), Guajira, Colombia, that contains one of the oldest records of neotropical rain forest flo...

Miospore assemblages from Late Ordovician (Katian-Hirnantian), Ghelli Formation, Alborz Mountain Range North-eastern Iran: Palaeophytogeographic and palaeoclimatic implications
Well-preserved miospore assemblages are recorded from the Late Ordovician (Katian-Hirnantian), Ghelli Formation in Pelmis-gorge at the north-eastern Alborz Mountain The palynomorphs were extracted from siliciclastic deposits which are well-dated by using of marine palynomorphs (acritarchs and chitinozoans). The encountered miospore assemblages consist of 14 genera (28 species: 26 cryptospores a...
متن کاملPalynomorphs’ response to sea-level fluctuations: a case study from Late Cretaceous – Paleocene, Gurpi Formation, SW Iran
Statistical studies on Palynology contents of Late Cretaceous to Paleocene age Gurpi Formation in a surface section in Zagros Basin,SW Iran indicate changes in abundance, species diversity, ratio of Spiniferites to Cyclonephelium (S/C), palynological marine index(PMI) values and organic facies. These palynological variations clearly reflect fluctuations in relative sea-level and depositionalenv...
متن کاملMonitoring of the Vallcebre landslide, Eastern Pyrenees, Spain
In 1996 and 1997 a monitoring network was set up at the translational slide of Vallcebre. Fourteen boreholes were equipped with piezometers, wire extensometers and inclinometers. Since then groundwater levels changes and wire displacements have been automatically recorded every 20 minutes. Superficial displacements have been periodically measured with differential GPS. The monitoring network ha...
